A photo freezes time and lets you draw the detail calmly. But a photo has already flattened the three-dimensional world into two, and taken some of the decisions away from you.

Drawing from life is harder because the model moves and the light shifts. But that difficulty teaches your eye to translate form itself, something a photo never teaches.
